Fighting Through Pain in the Saddle: A Lesson in Breathing

Horse riding is an incredible experience of connection and skill, but sometimes, it’s also a test of endurance. Today’s ride was a reminder of that for me. I found myself battling not just the usual physical demands, but something more personal—a sharp, persistent pain. As I rode, the discomfort became so overwhelming that I caught myself doing something all too common in moments of stress: I was holding my breath.

At first, it seemed like holding my breath might help control the pain, but it only made things worse. My muscles tensed, my focus drifted, and the ride felt more laborious. That’s when I realized I needed to breathe. A simple inhale, followed by a deliberate exhale, and suddenly, the pressure lifted. It was as if the act of breathing unlocked a sense of relief, and I was able to refocus on the ride.

Breathing is often overlooked, but it’s the key to managing both mental and physical strain. When we’re in pain, the body’s instinct is to tighten up, and our breath becomes shallow, which only amplifies that discomfort. By consciously breathing, I was able to release that tension and let my body work in harmony with the horse once again.

Today’s ride reminded me that sometimes, the biggest challenge isn’t just the physical strain of riding—it’s controlling your response to it. Learning to breathe through the pain can help you stay in control and keep you connected to the moment, whether you’re navigating a tricky course or simply enjoying the ride.

Next time you find yourself in a tough spot in the saddle, don’t forget to breathe. It could make all the difference.
